Sometimes it is not how much you do, or where you do it, but what you do, and where you put it that matters! Whether it is innovation, a bright idea, or sometimes the obvious staring you right in the face, it does not matter where inspiration comes from, only that it happens, and that you act on it when it does.

I'll include two examples of what I'm talking about here so you can see what I mean by the rather ambiguous paragraph above.

Bluebird Care (a large franchise, I think we would all agree) had an inspiring idea, which can only be described as 'coffee table marketing', a useful yet playful, informative and common place item that will always be to hand: a coffee mug. The mug displayed the client's name and tea/coffee requirements on it… oh and of course the Bluebird logo and contact details for the particular territory office in question.

Think about that for a moment, an item that is always there, unique to the individual, with the company brand and the contact numbers on it. For individuals that may not be the most mobile or communicative, this is indeed a great and cost-effective little item!

Mac Tools (again, I think we would all agree they are another decent sized franchise) have a little van-shaped magnet with the franchisee’s name and mobile number on it. Why is this special? Well, think about their business model; they need the mechanics to order and re-order from them, so in the environment they work a business card is useless, most paper items are useless.

A magnetic card, however, shaped like the van they drive with their contact details on it means they can be stuck all over the tool boxes and anything metal without causing any damage, not to mention these are very cost effective to produce yet again.

The point I'm trying to make here is a very simple one, think about what you need your marketing collateral to achieve, then produce the items that are most effective and cost-efficient at achieving the goals you've set!

As stated at the start, it's not always 'quantity or location', but can just as easily be 'item and position'.
